Germany: 2nd Stop

Eccoci giunti alla seconda tappa nel nostro giro del mondo culinario nei ristoranti di Londra.

Superata la Francia, ci siamo diretti verso il sud della Germania, a Bierschenke, ristorante bavarese nei pressi di Liverpool Street Station.

L'appuntamento era alle 13.15 di fronte al ristorante. Le nostre amiche tedesche Nicole, Pia, Saskia e Lisa sono arrivate con precisione... tedesca. Stranamente anche noi eravamo in orario.

E da dove vengono fuori queste amiche tedesche? - vi chiederete voi. Facile, abbiamo un amico in comune: Facebook! :)

Il locale era molto grande e spazioso, con panche di legno che potevano ospitare fino a una decina di persone per tavolo. Le cameriere indossavano il tipico costume bavarese e la musica di sottofondo era pop tedesco anni '90. Nel menu' un'ampia scelta di schnitzel, salsicce e il tipico stinco di maiale, perfetto per la dieta post-natalizia.

Salvatore ha scelto un tipico piatto Svevo: filetto di maiale con salsa ai funghi e Spätzle fatti in casa. Sara ha preso il piatto di salsicce miste, patate e crauti. Ovviamente non poteva mancare un'ottima e tedeschissima weissbier.  Come dessert strudel di mele: piuttosto buono ma, ahime', non abbastanza caldo.

Molto calda invece la compagnia! Abbiamo scoperto che:

- non importa la nazionalita': trasferirsi a Londra e restare al passo con questa enorme citta' e' difficile per tutti;

- se hai 30 anni e non sei ancora sposato, in Germania i tuoi amici ti fanno fare la penitenza: se sei uomo devi pulire per terra con lo spazzolino da denti in un posto pubblico; se sei donna, devi pulire i manici delle porte. Vabbe', ogni Paese ha le sue stranezze!

- perfino i tedeschi pensano che gli inglesi siano alcolizzati. E ho detto tutto...

L'atmosfera era molto piacevole e, tra una birra e una chiacchiera, siamo tornati a casa alle 8, non prima di salutarci, pero', con un bagel al manzo salato di "Beigel Bake": il fornaio piu' zozzo, buono ed ebreo di Brick lane.

- Stein's, lungo il Tamigi, piu' adatto pero' ad una tappa primaverile, in quanto all'aperto

Here we are at our second stop of the Food World Tour of London.

After France, we headed to the south of Germany, at Bierschenke, Bavarian Restaurant nearby Liverpool Street Station.

The meeting was at 1.15 pm in front of the restaurant. Our German friends Nicole, Pia, Saskia and Lisa arrived with… German punctuality. Strangely enough, we were also on time.

And where the hell do these German friends come from? - you wonder. That’s simple, we have a friend in common: Facebook! :)

The place was very big and spacious, with wooden benches that could accommodate up to 10 people per table. The waitresses wore the typical Bavarian costume and the music was playing 90’s German pop on the background. In the menu, a broad selection of schnitzels, wursts and the typical pork shank, perfect for the January detox…

Salvatore chose a Swabian meal: pork fillet with mushroom sauce and homemade Swabian noodles. Sara picked the original “Bierschenke” sausage platter, including Nürnberger, Frankfurter and Bratwurst sausages, served with mash and sauerkraut. Obviously we could not do without a great and very German Weissbier. As a dessert apple strudel: quite good, but unfortunately, not warm enough.

The company, on the other hand, was very warm! We discovered that:

- whatever the nationality, moving to London and keeping up with this huge city is hard for everyone;

- if you are 30 and not yet married, in Germany your friends like to punish you: if you’re a guy, they make you sweep the floor with a toothbrush in a public place; if you’re a woman, they make you clean doors’ handles. Fair enough, every country has its own strangeness!

- even German people think that English people are alcoholics. Just saying…

The atmosphere was very enjoyable: chatting and drinking, we went home at 8pm, not before saying good-bye, though, with a hot salt beef bagel at “Beigel Bake”, the most slob, good tasting and Jewish bakery in Brick Lane.
