AsianFeast at FestivalAsia

Special episode of the LondonFoodWorldTour! In fact, our blog has been invited to join FestivalAsia, the first and largest London's indoor festival on all things Asia, that took place on the 15th - 17th May in the large events' space of Tobacco Dock.

Much more than a food experience this time. At FestivalAsia, together with our most loyal followers Saskia and Pia, we tasted a mixture of music, dance, fashion and art coming from every corner of Asia. We admired the belly dancers of Fleur Estelle, the Bollywood dancers of Orientalya and listened to a kayagum concert - traditional Korean harp - played by the Kaya duo.

We surely didn't forget that, after Malaysia, the next destination of the LondonFoodWorldTour is Indonesia, and indeed the biggest pavilion of FestivalAsia was actually dedicated to this country.

Among the many things we learnt about Indonesia:

- it is a completely insular state, as well as the biggest archipelago in the world
- the biggest Indonesian islands are Sumatra, Borneo, Sulawesi, Java and Papua
- it is the 4th country in the world for number of inhabitants: it has 250 million inhabitants, little less than the US (about 320 million) and more than Brazil (about 200 million)
- the distance between the most western Indonesian island (Sumatra) and the most eastern one (Papua) is bigger than the distance between London and Moscow

In the meanwhile, Pia, Sara and Saskia tried on the traditional Indonesia dress - with poor results, as you can see from the pictures at the end of this article..

Stopping by the food court was a must. There were several warung - also spelt waroeng -, a type of small family-owned restaurants or cafes, popular in Indonesia. We tried the authentic beef rendang prepared by the skilful hands of the Warung Makan ladies, and the satay skewers of the Waroeng Windsor.

It went more or less this way:

Sara: - Can I take a picture?
Lady from Waroeng Windsor: - Sure!
Sara: - Do you know that also in the area of Italy where I come from we have skewers like these? They are called arrosticini...
Lady from Waroeng Windsor: - Pescara!
Sara: - Give me them all!

After a bellyful, we headed to the Spiritual Room - yes, life is a matter of priorities... -, where we followed a conference about meditation, held by the Zen monk Giuseppe Mokuza Signoritti.

It went more or less this way:

Audience: - Why should I practice meditation?

Monk: - No reason. Don't do it, you can.
Audience: - What are the advantages of meditation for health?
Monk: - None.

Great, monk, you convinced us! It must be that we have got the zen inside us...

And this pioneering edition of FestivalAsia convinced us as well. We hope we'll be able to come back again next year and that it is going to be only the first one of a long series!

Puntata speciale del LondonFoodWorldTour! Infatti il nostro blog e' stato invitato a FestivalAsia, il primo e piu' grande festival indoor sulla cultura asiatica a Londra, che si e' svolto dal 15 al 17 Maggio nell'ampio spazio attrezzato Tobacco Dock.

Molto, molto piu' un'esperienza culinaria questa volta. A FestivalAsia, insieme alle fedelissime Saskia e Pia, abbiamo provato un misto di musica, danze, moda e arte provenienti da ogni angolo dell'Asia. Abbiamo ammirato le danzatrici di danza del ventre di Fleur Estelle, i ballerini Bollywood di Orientalya e ascoltato il concerto di kayagum, tradizionale arpa coreana, suonata dal duo Kaya.

Non abbiamo di certo dimenticato che, dopo la Malaysia, la destinazione seguente del LondonFoodWorldTour e' l'Indonesia, e infatti il padiglione piu' grande di FestivalAsia era dedicato proprio a questo paese.

Tra le tante cose che abbiamo imparato sull'Indonesia:

- e' uno stato interamente insulare nonche' l'arcipelago piu' grande del mondo
- le isole indonesiane piu' grandi sono Sumatra, il Borneo, Sulawesi, Java e Papua
- e' il quarto paese piu' popolato al mondo: conta piu' di 250 milioni di abitanti, poco meno degli Stati Uniti (circa 320 milioni) e piu' del Brazile (circa 200 milioni)
- la distanza tra l'isola indonesiana piu' a ovest (Sumatra) e quella piu' a est (Papua) e' maggiore della distanza tra Londra e Mosca

Nel frattempo, Pia, Sara e Saskia hanno provato la tradizionale veste indonesiana - con scarsi risultati, come potete vedere dalle foto alla fine di questo articolo...

Tappa d'obbligo agli stand del cibo. C'erano vari warung - anche scritto waroeng -, piccoli ristoranti o caffe a conduzione familiare, tipici in Indonesia. Abbiamo assaggiato l'autentico manzo rendang, preparato dalle sapienti mani delle signore del Warung Makan, e gli "arrosticini" - satay del Waroeng Windsor.

E' andata piu' ho meno cosi':

Sara: - Posso fare una foto?
Signora del Waroeng Windsor: - Certo!
Sara: - Sa che anche nella zona dell'Italia da cui provengo abbiamo spiedini simili? Si chiamano arrosticini...
Signora: - Pescara!
Sara: - Me li dia tutti!

Una volta riempita la pancia, ci siamo diretti verso la Spiritual Room - si la vita e' fatta di priorita'... -, dove abbiamo seguito una conferenza sulla meditazione, tenuta dal monaco Zen Giuseppe Mokuza Signoritti.

E' andata piu o meno cosi':

Pubblico: - Perche' dovrei praticare la meditazione?
Monaco: - Nessuno motivo. Puoi non farla.
Pubblico: - Quali benefici ha la meditazione sulla salute?
Monaco: - Nessuno.

Bravo, monaco, a noi ci hai convinto! Si vede che siamo zen dentro...

Cosi' come ci ha convinto anche questa prima edizione del FestivalAsia. Speriamo di poterci tornare il prossimo anno e che sia solo la prima di una lunga serie!
